Yunan
Size: Bottle

"Many wines claim uniqueness - Ao Yun's claim is incontestable." - Jancis Robinson

$2,500

Tasting Notes

The wine offers an intense, deep dark colour. Intriguing bouquet of blackberry, blueberry and olives. Followed by hints of bark, mushroom and ripe currants. Rich and structured- it displays plenty of depth and energy with a mineral finish that just keeps on going. Reminiscent of Chateau Latour with a richer texture. This is a wine that really impresses the critics with all its finesse and quality of tannins. "Would be very interesting to re-taste it after a decade along with the first growth." Eric de Rothschild, proprietor of Chateau Lafite.

AO YUN

Ao Yun- meaning "Proud Cloud”, is a project between the Chinese government and the French Moet Henessey franchise which was initiated in 2002. The aim of the project is to produce a World Class Chinese luxury wine that could be widely traded and recognized in the international Fine wine market. After years of meticulous research, at ideal site North west of Yunnan was found. The winery is a nine-hour jeep drive from Shanri-La, just below the sacred Meili Mountain and not very far from the Burmse border. As the name of the winery suggests, the vines are proudly grown at a dazzling 8000 feet (2400m) in the Himalayas. The air is so thin and dry that there is no need for pesticides or fertilizers. The vineyard and the winery are so remote that almost everything has to be done by hand. At this height, even the veteran wine maker Maxence Dulou found fermentation was quite an effort! These rare gems have impressed a lot of critics so far and their grand vin has been widely tipped “as the first luxury Chinese wine to break into the international fine wine market.” (Decanter)
